113 Network management states are not the same as application states. For example, the application of an ECU may be active due to internal calculations that do not require interaction with other ECUs on the CAN bus - while network management remains inactive. ECUs that do not need to perform a function with the ignition off, but are required for the function of another ECU, can implement passive network management. An ECU with passive network management cannot actively keep the CAN bus awake and therefore does not send its own network message. As long as this ECU receives E/E network management messages on the bus, it remains active and sends application messages. However, this control unit itself has no need for communication, but is only a “mediator”. Large commercial vehicle and construction equipment manufacturers organise network management by defining different use cases and dividing them into graduated ECU categories based on their impact on and interaction in the network. The E/E Team Automotive Trucks, which was merged into Cognizant Mobility in June 2023 as part of ServiceXpert, offers over 25 years of experience in the definition of automotive E/E network management as well as in E/E testing of ECUs and subsystems. These conformity tests are carried out on the individual control unit as well as its behaviour in the network up to the entire vehicle as a step-bystep integration with testing. Different software versions resulting from the installation of new software or software updates, as well as the integration of ECUs from new suppliers into existing networks, play an important role and lead to repeated tests. The number of tests results per CAN bus line and per control unit. Through the comprehensive E/E testing of the network management, an experienced engineering service provider such as Cognizant Mobility can make a statement about the quality (robustness) of the E/E network and the individual ECUs at the end of the day, which contributes significantly to the quality assurance of the SOP of each commercial vehicle.
