110 After the start of production of the iGloss® matt ReSource clearcoat in June 2021, BASF is now also supplying the first automotive customers with the CathoGuard® 800 ReSource e-coat. This anti-corrosion product offers the customer a significant added value and serves as optimal basis for the further paint system. The product does without organic tin compounds and has a low solvent content. An optimized film thickness distribution permits material to be saved and, at the same time, guarantees protection of the entire body thanks to its good throwing power. The product also contributes to sustainability by reducing waste water, which in turn reduces the amount of fresh water required for the process. The iGloss® matt ReSource clearcoat, on the other hand, as the top layer of the paint system, provides effective protection against external influences and lends the vehicle a uniquely silky and smooth appearance. To meet these demanding requirements, the clearcoat combines various properties: it provides high scratch resistance under wet and dry conditions and protects the car against substances such as bird droppings and oil. In order to make the manufacture of the products even more efficient and resource-saving, thus further improving the ecological footprint of the products, BASF’s biomass balance approach comes in. Biomass balance approach The biomass balance approach helps to significantly reduce CO2 emissions without compromising quality. For this purpose, fossil materials with a high CO2 load are being replaced by renewable raw materials with a better carbon footprint early on. Then, these raw materials, such as bio-based naphtha and biomethane, are used to produce primary chemical products and are fed into BASF’s production Verbund. The proportion of bio-based raw materials is certified according to the European REDcert2 standard and assigned to the corresponding sales products in a calculation model. By using more sustainable product variants for automotive coatings, around 40 percent of CO2 per coating layer can be avoided while retaining the consistent quality and properties. This leads to a significant permanent reduction of carbon emissions at customer plants. The more customers purchase biomass-balanced products, the greater the share of renewable resources will be in BASF’s production. By integrating the concept of sustainability into the entire value chain of paint production, BASF ensures the resource-saving and sustainable production of its OEM coatings. BMW Group as a pioneer BASF supports its customers in their sustainability goals with innovative solutions. The BMW Group is the first carmaker to place its trust in sustainable automotive OEM coatings certified according to BASF’s biomass balance approach. After iGloss matt Resource clearcoat served as a pioneer for further launches of biomass-balanced products at the BMWGroup, also the CathoGuard® 800 Resource e-coat is now going into OEM production at the BMW Group plants in Leipzig, Germany, and Rosslyn, South Africa. On average, around 250,000 vehicles are produced in these plants each year. With its biomass-balanced products, BASF is thus making an important contribution to reducing emissions at the BMW Group, which has set itself the goal of establishing the most sustainable supply chain in the automotive industry. Products and Markets Automotive coatings based on renewable raw materials go into series production By Jörg Zumkley, Global Communications, BASF Coatings division BASF’s Coatings division is constantly developing new technologies and methods to make processes and products more sustainable. One way of producing sustainable automotive coatings without changing the formulation is BASF’s biomass balance approach. For the first time now, two automotive OEM coatings based on this approach are going into series production.
