83 terials, has decided to convert all commercial vehicles and buses to hydrogen technology by 2035. The American Nikola Motor Company, in which Bosch also has a stake, is working on a major order from the Anheuser-Busch brew- ery group for over 800 fuel cell trucks. The company is said to have over 14,000 pre-or- ders for this type of truck. A project initiated by the retailer Coop in Swit- zerland is almost exemplary and is now being carried out by a whole range of private compa- nies. The goal is to get 1,600 hydrogen trucks on the road by 2025. The commercial vehicles come from the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai. The hydrogen filling stations are set up by a private support association. These few examples show that we run the risk of missing out on this important technology worldwide. It is of course to be welcomed when – finally – Daimler and Volvo team up to develop fuel cell drives for commercial vehi- cles and intend to develop heavy commercial vehicles for long-distance transport ready for series production by the end of this decade. But there is still a lack of integrated and fu- ture-oriented concepts that take into account not only the manufacturer‘s interests, but the perspectives of all steakholders. The federal example in particular shows how important it is to take potential customers on board and to set up appropriate networks. These include in particular trade, logistics and forwarding agents as well as private and public transport operators. The public sector in particular could not only play a key role here in providing or ap- proving the necessary infrastructure. Subject to procurement law considerations, in the case of public tenders for transport services, the providers who provide the tendered service with vehicles powered by hydrogen could be preferred. A similar procedure could be used to procure vehicles for public companies. Colleges and universitiesmust also be involved with their developments and capacities in the process of conceptual and structural trans- formation and further development of the domestic automotive and supplier industry. Hurry is always required. Not only the corona pandemic, but also and primarily international competition is forcing us to act quickly and in a structurally sustainable manner.
