SAP S/4HANA: A Turning Point in Customs and Foreign Trade As confirmed by a survey b y Techconsult among 250 medium-sized companies in Ger- many, many medium-sized SAP user com- panies are planning to switch to the ERP software suite SAP S/4HANA. As a result of this step, they can implement innovation pro- jects using the latest SAP technology already now. At the same time, they create investment security, as the mainstream maintenance for SAP ERP and the SAP Business Suite expires at the end of 2025. In terms of customs and foreign trade man- agement, the move to SAP S/4HANA is a turning point as the SAP S/4HANA for Inter- national Trade solution replaces the “classic” foreign trade components. International Trade functions are currently available for Intrastat declarations, foreign trade classification, and regulatory control; however, not for prefer- ence processing, which is a mandatory re- quirement for exporting companies. Effective Alternative to GTS and the Like The preference processes can optionally be mapped in the SAP Global Trade Services (SAP GTS) foreign trade solution or third- party software. However, both are associ- ated with considerable disadvantages for medium-sized companies: SAP GTS is usually oversized for their requirements. Implement- ing and maintaining this solution involves high costs, especially in the case of a three- tier system landscape. If you use non-SAP software, you do not only need your own IT infrastructure but also interfaces for data exchange, whose maintenance and service cost time and money. Besides this, there is redundant data retention with all its weak- nesses, such as the risk of inconsistencies in the database. SPEEDI offers a significantly more efficient and cost-effective alternative in this case as well. A transition package ensures the prob- lem-free replacement of the add-on, including the existing data structures, and the smooth interaction with SAP S/4HANA in the cur- rent version (1809). This benefits companies introducing the ERP software suite with the SPEEDI solutions for customs and foreign trade (greenfield approach), as well as com- panies already using the add-on under SAP ERP, which would like to continue using it af- ter conversion to SAP S/4HANA (brownfield approach). Creating a Tailor-made Concept When implementing preference processing using the SPEEDI platform under SAP ERP or SAP S/4HANA, WSW Software is available as an experienced partner and “trusted advisor” with extensive consulting and process know- how and services from a single source. WSW experts first determine the individual require- ments regarding preference processing. Based on this, they create a tailor-made concept and implement it in close coordination and coop- eration with the customer. Export-oriented companies can derive enormous business benefits from this.
