129 applying the decomposition method, which enables a considerably faster test through- put than would be possible with a complete battery. In addition, the battery can be ef- ficiently tested in a simulated vehicle envi- ronment using AVL’s tools. Therefore, very good validation results can be generated in an early stage of project phase. Test quality The quality of test results depends upon how well the test has been adapted to the com- ponent under scrutiny. Several test methods that are used for HV batteries today were historically derived from smaller E/E compo- nents and are not always applicable for the requirements of modern HV batteries. For example, an incorrect test method used to test operational stability can quickly lead to high damage KPIs, or expressed in another way, to systematic over-engineering. Only applicable testing by enabling known test procedures for HV batteries leads to mean- ingful results. AVL analyses existing test procedures and, on request, will create new test specifications that match the compo- nent. Thanks to its excellent positioning in this area, AVL possesses a very broad foun- dation of data and experience that can flow into the development of new test methods and test specifications. Test speed If the equipment used to test the different environmental, misuse, safety and lifetime tests for the battery are distributed either worldwide or over several testing sites, then the test objects too often spend too much time in transit due to the different test avail- abilities. This results in too much valuable time being wasted until the unit under test has completed all tests. To help, AVL offers battery test centres for complete testing at a single location. So for example, AVL opened one of Europe’s most modern battery labo- ratories in Graz. We offer modern testing ca- pacity over an area of 700 m 2 to run electrical and thermal testing of batteries, combined in a single test procedure, currently up to 750 kW and 1200 V. Our expertise makes AVL the right technology partner for turnkey, holistic test solutions for HV batteries. We have the required know-how and resources to concep- tualize complete, customer-specific battery laboratories and support our customers from the planning stage, through the construction stage and up to final commissioning. Our complete testing laboratories in the shape of containerized solutions allow us to offer a maximum of flexibility and use. The battery tester AVL E-STORAGE BT™, the automation system AVL LYNX 2™, the AVL battery test chamber and the AVL safety system provide ideal conditions for electrical performance tests as well as thermal and environmen- tal tests. For example, the AVL E-STORAGE product line covers the complete voltage, current and power portfolio. Solutions are available for module testing up to 250 V as well as solutions for PHEV packs up to 800 V and BEV packs up to 1200 V. The standard portfolio of battery test chambers is available in sizes of 12, 16 and 30 m 3 and its power classes are ideally suited for the cur- rent test cycles for battery testing. The com- plete system is controlled by the real-time automation system AVL LYNX 2™. To summarize, the demanding development domain of battery testing often offers signif- icant potential for optimization. Only if test efficiency, quality and speed are optimized against each other can a suitable and attrac- tively priced product emerge. AVL Electrification http://bit.ly/2KP936R Website WE TEST FOR YOU.
