stands for system solutions that work on any level of industrial automation, aiming at con- sistent and integrated data and information management. The Karlsruhe Smart Factory creates new algorithms and procedures at the interface between materials, production and information technology. On this basis, the three institutes, in cooperation with industry, will optimize ‘immature’ processes for mass production. Overview of the Karlsruhe research approach The high-wage nation of Germany and the federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg owe a major part of their wealth to the ability of their medium-sized enterprises to introduce inno- vative products to the global market, quickly and repeatedly. In this process, it is essential to maintain a permanent scientific and tech- nological advantage over international com- petitors and potential imitators. The methodology to be developed in the Karlsruhe Smart Factory is directly aimed at systematically gaining and expanding these kinds of advantages for new, challenging man- ufacturing processes. Increasingly, we can observe that new manufacturing processes are no longer specified in each and every de- tail by the engineers, as used to be the case in the past. Rather, it has to be possible to manufacture new high-quality products even while the manufacturing processes are still being engineered. Consequently, ‘immature‘ processes mean that the manufacturing pro- cesses have not yet been completely under- stood and mastered, either because they are new or use new materials or because it has not yet been fully understood which process parameters are ultimately responsible for the product quality. This means that the Karlsru- he Smart Factory investigates which factors need to be modified or improved to achieve a consistently high quality of the products. If the idea of how to solve this problem proves to be efficient in applied industry, new prod- ucts can be provided at a much earlier stage because immature processes can be industri- alized more quickly.
