As for the motor’s cooling system, the most effective method with regard to continuous operating performance is oil cooling, as it brings coolant and key thermal components into direct contact. Configurations with tem- porarily very high oil temperatures benefit most from a system combining water eth- ylene glycol (WEG) cooling with oil sprayed internally. The performance of the e-machine is also influenced by its winding and wire shape. A distributed wound stator assembly minimizes torque ripple and cogging torque, thus reduc- ing noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) of the electric motor and, in turn, of the overall system. Ideally, a rectangular conductor wire is used in the above-mentioned winding scheme to maximize current density, improve heat dissipation and increase power density while reducing NVH. With regard to the rotor assembly, an inte- rior permanent magnet (IPM), which can be used in combination with all types of stator assemblies, enhances efficiency and contin- uous performance of the electric machine compared to induction machines since the magnetic field does not require any external excitation. Clutch options Besides the conventional single disconnect clutch often used in the P 2 arrangement, there are further configurations such as triple clutch designs or one-way clutches (OWC) which substitute a P 2 disconnect clutch that can be adapted to improve packaging and/or efficiency. For DCT hybrid transmissions incorporating both disconnect and dual clutch within the electric motor, the triple clutch design offers an attractive overall length, making it an ideal option. An OWC further minimizes the space required for the disconnect device while also reducing complexity, improving efficiency and lowering the system cost.
