41 DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies), DIN (German Institute for Standardization) and IEC (International Electrotechnical Commis- sion). AutomationML™ is a standard for the engineering of production systems, which we develop in cooperation with national and international partners of the consortium. It allows for the aforementioned consistent data exchange regardless of the type of software tools. The solutions can therefore be deployed globally and the standardization is beginning to bear fruit already. AutomationML and OPC UA, for instance, have meanwhile become IEC standards, and there is a guideline by the Association of German Engineers (VDI 5600 part 3) for data exchange between machines and equipment and the MES. In addition, the MES D.A.CH. Verband (MES Association for Germany, Austria and Switzerland) has pub- lished the UMCM interface, which is based on our solutions. OPC Foundation and AutomationML e.V. have established a joint working group, which has published a Companion Specification before the 2016 Hannover Trade Fair. It enables Auto- mationML descriptions to be mapped to an OPC UA information model. These solutions allow plant operators, system integrators, manufacturers of machinery and equipment, component suppliers and pro- viders of shopfloor-related IT systems to save demonstrable engineering costs for › the startup of machinery and equipment › changes in production. Fraunhofer IOSB‘s software solutions are already in operational use in industrial projects, for which we provide solution components for the self-description of machine elements and machine controls. We currently provide the necessary hard- ware (“PLUGandWORK Cube“)that allows manufacturers to upgrade their machinery so it can ‘speak‘ the OPC UA communica- tion standard, including (and this is new!) the equipment description in the form of an AutomationML model. This new upgrade makes an end to the linguistic confusion that has been prevailing in manufacturing so far. Now, machinery and equipment only ‘speak‘ AutomationML and communicate their data via OPC UA. This ensures a clear description of the data, allowing it to be used unambig- uously by the entire production system. The PLUGandWORK Cube includes an assistant system enabling users to describe the ‘skills‘ of machinery and equipment graphically so they do not need any modelling know-how. The assistant system generates the Automa- tionML model, which, in turn, serves as the basis of the communication server. This is how existing machinery and equipment can get ready for Industrie 4.0. ■ Visualization Production Monitoring & Control PLUGandWORK-Cube • identifies controller • starts assisting tool to model ‚abilities‘ and parameters of equipment • generates an OPC UA-server from the model • Start working!
