How prepared is Saarstahl for the demand for green steel? Schiestel: The Saarland steel industry has set itself ambitious targets: At the end of 2022, we presented a EUR 3.5 billion plan, subject to public funding, to move toward future-focused steel production using hydrogen (instead of coal and coke). This is an important step toward achieving a 55 percent carbon reduction by 2030 and complete carbon-neutrality by 2045 at the latest. The acquisition of the two French plants Saarstahl Rail and Saarstahl Ascoval has opened up new markets. Saarstahl Ascoval already produces climate-friendly steel in an electric arc furnace, and Saarstahl Rail produces quality rails with the carbon-reduced steel from Saarstahl Ascoval. As a manufacturer of green rails, the Saarstahl Group has a unique selling point in Europe. The latest platinum medal rating by EcoVadis for our sustainability management places Saarstahl among the top one percent of all companies in our industry and confirms that we are effectively implementing our strategy in terms of sustainability.
