6 Whatever drives the car of the future, its soul will be able to be from Saarland. With the planned settlement of the battery manu- facturer SVOLT, Saarland is moving up from a standing start into the premier league of electromobility – with all the potential posi- tive secondary effects that this can have for suppliers. Our hydrogen strategy has result- ed in up to 400 million euros in funding for infrastructure and hydrogen applications in Saarland. This is the impetus to make Saa- rland as excellent in hydrogen as we have been for a long time in the classic combus- tion engine. Today, Saarland combines traditional in- dustry, a skilled workforce and innovative know-how from cutting-edge research, for example in IT, artificial intelligence and au- tonomous driving. Our business location is diverse. Even where production does not take place in Saarland, Saarland software companies may be controlling it. With a cross-border test field, we are testing fu- ture technologies such as automated and autonomous driving. And, because we are the land of short distances, cooperations are easier. This means that the companies in this sector are optimally coordinated with The car of the future has a Saarland soul By Anke Rehlinger, Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor, Energy and Transport, Deputy Minister President of the Saarland We in the Saarland can build automobiles. And we are proud of it. While elsewhere in Germany the impression is being given that industry is no longer welcome, the Saarland is pursuing an active industrial and settlement policy. And with success! The automotive industry in Saarland creates value, provides good training and tens of thousands of jobs. Image: © Oliver Dietze Share one another. Internationally operating cor- porations have operations in the Saarland and benefit from the large number of small and medium-sized companies from the re- gion. With its location in the heart of Europe, Saarland is the optimal starting point for business in the European markets. Even if the entire industry is in a state of flux and many a battle with the EU and Berlin will still have to be fought out, we in the Saarland see the transformation as an opportunity. We want to preserve as many jobs as pos- sible and at the same time create new, fu- ture-proof jobs. This includes strong co-de- termination, because it is the employees who will be responsible for this technologi- cal and structural change. Efforts for further training and qualification, especially in this transformation industry, must therefore be much stronger. The Corona pandemic has shown how vul- nerable global supply chains are. Europe and Germany as an industrial location must therefore re-locate important parts of production here. The lack of semicon- ductors, for example, is a massive prob- lem for the automotive industry and is Anke Rehlinger, Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor, Energy and Transport and Deputy Minister President of the Saarland dampening the economic upturn. Stron- ger semiconductor production in Germany would be an important pillar for a stable German automotive industry. It is good that German Economics Minister Peter Al- tmaier has announced another IPCEI with support for semiconductor production. We need progress here. That won’t help in the acute shortage, but it will stabilize supply chains in the future. For me as a classic car fan, the car is more than a vehicle or part of a value chain. It is also a cultural asset. And so, I say as a per- son and as Minister of Economics and Dep- uty prime Minister of a proud automotive country: The car of the future will also have a Saarland soul. Summary Das Auto der Zukunft hat eine saarländische Seele Von Anke Rehlinger, Ministerin für Wirtschaft, Arbeit, Energie und Verkehr, stellvertretende Minister- präsidentin des Saarlandes Wir im Saarland können Automobilindus- trie.
