15 Why am I emphasizing this? Because we can’t point out often enough that the Ger- man auto industry is the world leader in combustion technology. In addition to the technological lead and high level of inno- vation for which the industry stands, it secures a large part of our prosperity as well as hundreds of thousands of well-paid jobs, many of them in drive and engine technology. This is especially true for our Saarland. Our automotive and supplier industry depends to a large extent on the combustion en- gine; around 20,000 jobs benefit directly or indirectly from it. The regional econom- ic effects are considerable and the SVOLT settlement – as correct and significant as it is – will not be able to compensate for politically induced declines in sales and employment in the field of conventional drive systems for years to come – if at all. It is therefore an important signal that the Saarland Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Saarland Chamber of Commerce and In- dustry and autoregion repeatedly take up technological issues, such as the question of using synthetic fuels, the use of hydro- gen and hydrogen technology and much more, and bring them into the debates. Together, we believe that it is not a matter of playing off one type of drive against the other. It is not a question of either/or, but rather of both/and. Alongside e-mobility and hydrogen, synthetic fuels are another vehicle on the road to global CO2 reduction. Because in the end, it is always the con- sumers who decide which technology will provide the greatest benefit for them. For significant progress to be made here, we need a proper institutional framework. The first thing we need, in the best free market economy sense, is openness to technology. It is not prohibitions, government regulation and self-imposed restrictions that lead to more innovation and growth. Instead, we need more freedom, more personal respon- sibility, more creative leeway and more in- centives for investment – also in the form of funding programs or an expansion of tax in- centives for research. But above all, we need commitment and joint advertising for great- er acceptance. This applies to hydrogen as well as to synthetic fuels. In addition, we finally need more courage for an honest and holistic debate: This in- volves including the CO2 emissions gener- ated in battery cell production in the CO2 balance of a battery-electric vehicle. Re- cent studies have once again shown that six times as many raw materials are needed to produce an electric vehicle as are need- ed to produce a diesel or gasoline engine – new dependencies on resource-rich coun- tries are already on the horizon. And the EU? Although it is trying to improve access to critical raw materials such as lithium, co- balt, copper, nickel and manganese with the Raw Materials Alliance established at the end of 2020, its efforts are still in their Share infancy. An honest debate also includes the issue of building need-related disposal capacities and addressing the foreseeable electricity and battery gap. In order to be able to guarantee the security of supply chains and adequate supply of green elec- tricity and hydrogen in the future, there must therefore be significantly more invest- ment in production facilities and in the ex- pansion of renewable energy sources and transport infrastructure. IHK and autoregion will continue to engage in the debates with a great deal of passion and expertise so that our automotive loca- tion will still have a future tomorrow.
