19 cost of ownership and many others. In terms of range, the MMCM can considerably in- crease the efficiency of amulti-speed gearbox and thereby the vehicle range. With its high torque capacity, single direction synchroni- zation and near zero drag torque, the MMCM delivers excellent results when engaging first gear. These include enhanced performance benefits such as sports car acceleration, start-up on high grades or other actions of small vehicles with low torque electrical mo- tors. The MMCM also helps reduce parasitic losses in normal driving since it is disengaged when the secondary clutch is engaged at the corresponding higher gear. Another potential design, applying the MMCM as a brake, is the planetary gear set with two brakes including a friction clutch (2nd gear) and the MMCM (1st gear). Multiple hydraulic and electric actuation options are available to meet the given sys- tem strategy. Hydraulic actuator examples include a two-position actuator featuring a transient middle position and a three-posi- tion discrete actuator with distinct piston areas. Electric actuator examples include a sector clutch, a strong solenoid and park lock actuator. System needs, including re- sidual torque and shift speed requirements, will determine the actuator size for the ap- plication. Summary of New Opportunities Successful hybridization or electrification of vehicles‘ propulsion systems requires inven- tive use of new functions and components in the drive trains. While electric engines are exceptionally efficient and dynamic drive units on the one hand, high energy efficiency is increasingly important due to for example reduced energy density of electrical storage systems on the other hand. To meet these challenges, new opportunities are emerging for innovative shift elements. The MMCM shiftable form lock clutch offers up to 4 dif- ferent modes (Free, OWC-L, OWC-R, Lock), along with hydraulic and electric actuation options, to provide a wide assortment of application opportunities for various vehicle propulsion systems.
