9 The Rheinland-Pfalz vehicle industry is undergoing a massive change! By Dr. Volker Wissing, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economics, Transport, Agriculture and Viniculture of the State of Rheinland-Pfalz TheRheinland-Pfalz vehicle industry (automotive, commercial vehicle, agricultural, constructionandspecial machinery industries) is a dominant industrial sector in our state. This sector employs around 60,000 people along its entire value chain in Rheinland-Pfalz. The vehicle industry makes a decisive contribution to added value, innovation, prosperityandemployment inRheinland-Pfalz. Thissectorwithinour state ischaracterised bycompanieswithseveral thousandemployeesaswell asahugenumberofsmall andmedium-sizedsuppliers. International competitivenessandglobal networkingby theRheinland-Pfalzcompanies in thissector areboth reflected by their above-average exporting strengths. Our state is also characterised by a large number of excellent colleges, universi- ties and research institutes that meet the challenges of the vehicle industry. They also carry out a high degree of applied re- search and development and can provide companies with needs-based support in order to meet the technical and non-tech- nical challenges involved in the structural change. The multifaceted expertise in the IT and software sectors, machinery and plant engineering as well as innova- tion management, strategic planning and business model development are partic- ularly noteworthy here. This outstand- ing infrastructure is complemented by high-performance clusters and networks as well as various state institutions whose expertise can be put to specific uses. This “Rheinland-Pfalz automotive engineering business ecosystem” will enable industry, research and politics to mutually shape the forthcoming structural and techno- logical transformation in such a way that the Rheinland-Pfalz vehicle industry will emerge stronger from it. Rheinland-Pfalz, which lies in the heart of Europe, is an important part of the greater region. I would like to cordially invite you to take advantage of our prime location in the heart of Europe’s industrial centres and sales markets. Welcome to Rheinland-Pfalz! We intend to achieve this by: ›  intensifying the exchanges and cooper- ation between the efficient environment of colleges, universities and research institutions that have expertise in ba- sic and applied research in a multitude of disciplines in and around the vehicle industry and this will involve the compa- nies within the Rheinland-Pfalz vehicle industry as well as other relevant part- ners ›  supporting networking and increasing the innovation capabilities of companies within the Rheinland-Pfalz vehicle indus- try, especially SMEs ›  further develop or make infrastructures and framework conditions that promote or enable the development of the poten- tial of the Rheinland-Pfalz vehicle indus- try transparent ›  making Rheinland-Pfalz even more visi- ble as an attractive location that is open to technology for developing, testing, producing and using vehicles and vehi- cle components as well as new business fields and business models relating to new vehicle concepts and mobility of- ferings.
