38 Human Solutions is changing ergonomics By Anton Preiss, Human Solutions, Kaiserslautern The automotive industry has one important aspect that puts it ahead of other industries: A car fits almost anyone and can be adapted to the needs of the driver and the other occupants in just a few simple steps. For more than 30 years now, HumanSolutions has been ensuring that this can be achievedwith itsRAMSISdigital manikin and unique ergonomics know-how – both of which can now be used by customers together with the company’s own engineering-as-a-service team on a project-by-project basis. The world is changing, and ergonomics is changing with it – in the course of global- ization, products have to function all over the world and in many cases they must be suitable for very different people. “It’s a great challenge to design vehicles that can be used comfortably and safely by people all over the world,” says Anton Preiß, Direc- tor Mobility at Human Solutions: “Thanks to our unique database and many years of project experience, we’ve now been sup- porting the automotive industry for more than 30 years, enabling companies to in- tegrate digital people into the design of vehicles at an early stage – and with a mar- ket coverage of around 75%, RAMSIS is the world’s leading digital manikin.” 3D database makes RAMSIS unique The top 30 companies in the international automotive industry use the RAMSIS digi- tal manikin by Human Solutions for the in- terior design of their vehicles. Only RAMSIS provides scientifically developed posture models for the automotive industry – and it is the only manikin in the world to have an anthropometric database that has been developed over several decades and also contains 3D information, such as corpu- lence. The data can also be evaluated on a country-specific basis, so a vehicle can be optimally developed for that country’s target market. Noticeable changes to vehicles RAMSIS has not only taken a seat in almost every car on the market, but also in trucks, airplanes, construction machines and even in submarines, ensuring safety and comfort in every vehicle. “RAMSIS has no- ticeably changed automotive design over the past 30 years,” emphasizes Preiß. “In the past, you could only move the steer- ing wheel up and down, if at all. Nowadays, very tall or very short people must also be able to push it forwards or backwards for a comfortable posture.” The roof height has also been influenced by RAMSIS over the past few years: higher roofs are now used to optimize visibility for tall people, which also prevents them driving with a curved posture. RAMSIS has also had a major influ- ence on seat belts. Digital belt simulation is so good today that it has significantly increased safety in the vehicle – and physi- cal belt testing is now hardly necessary. To continuously adapt RAMSIS to the current challenges of the industry, Human Solu- tions is conducting ongoing research proj- ects, one of which addresses the changes in passenger behavior caused by autono- mous driving. New – Engineering as a Service An in-house team at Human Solutions has now started to make ergonomics know- how available for customers on a proj- ect-by-project basis. “We create flexible resources in ergonomics competence for companies and absorb peak loads. This pays off for many of our customers – they receive technically sound support in de- velopment, increasing their agility,” says Preiß. “This in turn results in economic advantages in terms of cost and planning security.
